About Our Founder
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist of color, passionate about helping people heal relationships through love and collaboration. Growing up in a tumultuous environment, I explored different approaches to relationships and personal healing, ultimately finding my calling in therapy.
Determined to excel in empathy and non-judgment, I honed my skills in challenging settings - from a San Francisco Jail to a group home for troubled teens to a city clinic serving the most vulnerable. Through these experiences, I discovered my purpose and knew that therapy was my true path.

FAQs
Why did you choose to pursue a career in therapy?
I was drawn to the idea of offering individuals a chance at a brighter future, particularly those who may be considered underdogs. My journey began as a counselor for children in group homes, where I witnessed the profound impact of unresolved relationship issues on individuals. This experience fueled my passion for helping people mend relationships and heal emotional wounds. After my initial week at a methadone clinic supporting individuals battling opioid addiction, I realized that therapy was my calling.
Was therapy always your occupation?
Originally, I worked as a microprocessor designer for a leading semiconductor company, which exposed me to the corporate world and international travel. While I enjoyed these experiences, I felt a pull towards a more meaningful career path rooted in service to others. Overcoming personal trauma and navigating my own relationships revealed to me the value I could bring to others through therapy, leading me to embark on the challenging journey of becoming a therapeutic resource for those seeking transformation.
Why do you specialize in repairing relationships?
My dedication to couples therapy stems from witnessing the transformative impact it can have on individuals and their relationships. Observing the positive changes in couples following therapy sessions, where they realign with each other and rebuild trust, motivates me to continue this crucial work. My own relationship with my wife underscores the significance of applying the same skills I teach my clients during challenging times. Experiencing firsthand the difference effective communication and conflict resolution can make inspires me to help others achieve similar interpersonal growth.
Do you work with LGBTQ individuals?
Working with LGBTQ individuals is a heartfelt passion of mine. A significant portion of my clientele, ranging from 10% to 30%, identify as LGBTQ. Having lived in the LGBTQ-friendly environment of the San Francisco Bay Area for 16 years, I've supported gay and lesbian couples through therapy. While there are unique cultural considerations, the dynamics of love, conflict, and healing in relationships remain universal. For transgender individuals seeking therapy primarily related to transitioning, I believe in referring to specialized professionals for the most effective support.
Where are you from?
My background is a mosaic of experiences, starting from various parts of Michigan and Wisconsin, then moving to Portland, Singapore, and ultimately settling in the San Francisco Bay Area. Described as ambiguously ethnic, akin to 80s Benetton models but less glamorous, I identify as ethnically Chinese-Indonesian. Arriving in the U.S. at the age of 4, I navigated life as a first-generation immigrant, straddling multiple cultural identities and always feeling like the "different kid." Embracing my unique perspective, I've examined relationships and cultures from an outsider's lens, fostering a deep understanding of human connections.
What ethnicities do you work with?
I work with clients of all ethnicities. Fluency in English and the ability to express emotions in English are important for effective communication during our sessions. If you prefer speaking in a specific language for therapy, let me know, and I can potentially refer you to a therapist who speaks your preferred language. I've worked with individuals from various ethnic backgrounds, including Caucasian, African-American, LatinX, Asian, and Jewish clients.
Do you accommodate clients of different faiths?
Absolutely, I respect and integrate your faith into our sessions. Your belief system is honored, and we use language that aligns with your faith to explore how your experiences impact you. I do not impose religious teachings from any specific faith but instead work with and acknowledge the religious principles that are meaningful to you. While I identify as Unitarian and participate in the Unitarian community, I support clients of diverse faith backgrounds.
Do you have any unique interests from living in California for so long?
Yes, I might be considered a bit weird, but most people find me pleasant to be around. I value facts and evidence-based practices, enjoying cooking shows that blend science into their content. One of my favorite YouTube channels is "Hot Ones," where guests are interviewed while eating increasingly spicy chicken wings—it's not science-based cooking, but it sure evokes a range of emotions!
What do you appreciate most about Minnesota?
One of the things I value most about Minnesota is the sense of community, especially during snowy winters. The willingness of people to help each other during snowstorms truly embodies the kindness and compassion found in humanity. I experienced this firsthand during my early winters in Minnesota, where I got stuck multiple times while commuting. Each time, strangers came to my aid with shovels, reinforcing the spirit of neighborly support that Minnesotans exemplify.
Are you funny?
My humor tends to resonate differently with various people in my life. While my 9-year-old finds me funny, my wife may beg to differ. According to my friend Ryan, I can be quite humorous. Not to mention, my 2-year-old audience considers me downright hilarious.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Balancing spare time with life's demands can be a challenge, but I do find moments to indulge in activities that bring me joy. Jiu Jitsu is a favorite of mine as it offers real-time problem-solving, though I admittedly struggle with injuries that hinder my progress in the sport. Yoga is another passion, and I may explore Pilates in the future. While I used to love playing video games, the responsibilities of parenthood have limited my gaming time. Parenting, in many ways, feels like navigating a real-life game of "Frogger," but I cherish the experience and am grateful for my children.
